Richmond made their best start to a season since 1939, holding off a struggling Collingwood at the MCG in front of almost 60,000 fans to make it 6-0 on the season.

It was another case of a fast Tiger start that set up the victory, as Richmond booted five goals to one in the first term and held that lead for the majority of the game before a couple of late goals to the Pies made it a closer, 13.16 (94) to 12.10 (82) victory.

On a day where Dermott Brereton was celebrating his 200th game (that ultimately ended in injury for the ex-Hawthorn champ), Richmond would spoil the party and continued their hot start to the season in clinical fashion, and shot to second on the ladder as a result.

Midfielder Wayne Campbell, already having a sparkling season, put in arguably his best performance yet with 32 disposals, although he mysteriously missed out on the votes on Brownlow night.

Campbell's accomplice in the midfield Paul Broderick was also at his diligent best, picking up 31 disposals himself and feeding out the footy from the contest with his well-placed handballs, and laying seven tackles.

A 20-year old Matthew Richardson also had a day to remember, booting three goals, taking 10 marks, gathering 18 disposals and was so dominant that star full back Craig Kelly had to be moved off him, such was his dominance.

Hard nut midfielder/defender Duncan Kellaway time and again plonked himself in the path of the hulking Saverio Rocca with great courage and was solid throughout, but again he missed a chance in front of the big sticks to kick that ever elusive first goal.

Nick Daffy continued his strong form with another three goals including a terrific snap over his shoulder following a desperate Chris Naish smother, while Brendan Gale also chipped in with a couple of goals and was good late in the game in the ruck after Greg Dear went off with an injury.

It's important that Richmond only fielded two players (Greg Dear and Michael Gale) over the age of 26, giving Tigers fans a lot of hope not only for the rest of the '95 season, but also future years ahead.

The game also featured an 18-year old Aaron James playing for Collingwood, who would cross to Richmond in the season to come.

Stuart Wigney also kicked his first goal for the club.
