A stunning first quarter display from Richmond set up a thumping of North Melbourne that shocked the football world on ANZAC Day Eve, 1995.

The Tigers went on a rampage early, booting six unanswered goals in the first 8 minutes of play to build a buffer that would never be reeled back in, eventually winning out 21.8 (134) to 13.7 (85).

After starting the season 3-0 for the first time since 1982, the Tigers came ready to play at a raucous MCG for Monday night football, seemingly feeding off the energetic Richmond crowd who were at their boisterous best.

It was a heated and fiery opening term, with some questionable attacks on the man at times, but it was Richmond who were able to quickly mount the scoreboard pressure that would ultimately decide the result.

Tall duo Matthew Richardson and Stuart Edwards were on fire early for the Tigers, with their contested marking and general busyness around the forward line causing headaches for the Kangaroos defence. Richardson brought up his 100th career goal in this one, in what was just his 37th AFL game.

Greg Dear monstered Corey McKernan and Matthew Capuano in the ruck, while Michael Gale was huge on the wing with 27 disposals and 7 marks, many of which were cutting off opposition attacks. He also took home the three brownlow votes.

Defenders Scott Turner and Jamie Tape continued their strong form in defence, while David Bourke in just his third game had a blinder with 23 disposals while also kicking his first goal in league footy.

While the first quarter blitz naturally gets the nod as one of the best quarters of footy Richmond have played, the third quarter could be considered just as special. The Tigers kicked seven goals straight to North's 1.5 in a scintillating display of footy.

In stark contrast to the week prior where the Tigers kicked 4.16, the accurate kicking at goal completely blew their opposition out of the water. All in all a very powerful display.

In the dying moments, commentator Sandy Roberts said it was 'a night that Richmond fans will remember for a long time', and boy would we. The Tigers of '95 were quickly making a name for themselves across the AFL competition.
