AFLW Round 4, 2021 - Carlton vs Richmond

Richmond has come painstakingly close to recording its first victory in AFLW history, falling to rivals Carlton by 5 points at IKON Park.

After a hot start from the Tigers, the Blues slowly worked their way back into the contest and were dour in defence late to record a 8.3 (51) to 7.4 (46) victory.

Sarah Hosking gets a kick away from sister Jess, and her old side.

It was a game that featured many interesting tidbits, including it being Mon Conti's 25th AFLW game, and Sarah Hosking's first game against her old club, and her twin sister, Jess.

As mentioned, Richmond got off to a flyer, booting the opening three goals of the game, but in amongst that, the aforementioned Hosking copped a heavy knock and had to leave the ground for a concussion test.

While she would ultimately be ok and returned later in the game, the Blues took this opportunity to kick four goals in fairly quick succession, and actually took a one point lead into the main break.

The blues started to eek out a bit of a lead during the third, but the Tigers wouldn't go away, and when Courtney Wakefield goaled off the ground, the margin was back to two points with a quarter and a bit to play.

As the fourth quarter went back and forth, Richmond had a great opportunity to try and hit the front in the final minute with the ball at the top of their goalsquare, but just couldn't muster a goal, and instead would suffer their 10th loss in as many games in their short AFLW history.

Conti was again the star attraction, picking up 26 disposals (5 more than any other player on the ground) 8 clearances and easily the most metres gained on the ground with 469.

She was well aided in the midfield with #1 draft pick Ellie McKenzie showing she would be a star of the future with 14 disposals, 4 marks and 4 tackles, while Wakefield, Katie Brennan and Tayla Stahl were all busy up forward booting all 7 of the Tigers' goals between them.
