It may not have ended with a win, but history was made in Round 1, 2020 when Richmond's AFLW side took to the field for the first time.

Going up against the runners-up from the year prior was a tough task, with the Blues running out 6.12 (48) to 2.2 (14) winners.

But it was a night of celebration for Richmond, capped off in the fourth quarter with a goal by Sabrina Frederick, Richmond's first in the competition.

Carlton were too strong for the debutant side, keeping Richmond scoreless in the opening and third quarters and showing the importance of having experience in playing together.

For the Tigers, Phoebe Monahan was their best, not only with 14 disposals to lead her side, but also preventing a number of Carlton scoring opportunities with some strong defensive play.

In the middle, Mon Conti was the Tigers most assured ball user and showed that she was on the rise as a premier midfielder of the competition.

Captain Katie Brennan led from the front with 10 disposals and the goal assist to Frederick, while Holly Whitford also showed some great signs coming off the bench, particularly in the second quarter with her tackling pressure.
